Safe or Scam? WeGoLook’s Valentine’s Guide to Online Dating Websites

Looking for love in all the wrong places? WeGoLook wants to help keep you safe this Valentine’s Day. Know the scam signs to look for on the most popular dating sites to avoid heartbreak and costly mistakes.

Tinder

Why it is safe? Tinder connects to your personal Facebook page to create a profile. Facebook’s policy requires that you are a real person in order to create an account. It only lets people contact you if you both swipe "Like" (right).

Why scammers love it? As long as you can create an email address with a reasonable name, you can create a Facebook page which is a perfect scenario for scammers to target you. Tinder Plus now allows the ability to change your location…that means anyone, anywhere can target your city! Yikes! The app requires very little information in order to set up a profile, meaning scammers can be vague and lure you in with a false identity and attractive photos of a model.

Plenty of Fish

Why it is safe? The only form of verification the site has is the username must be connected to an email address.

Why scammers love it? You can create limitless free profiles associated with any email address. There is no geolocation if using the POF mobile app.  Any user can view your profile and contact you via the POF messaging system. Plenty of Fish offers many free options for communication and scammers can flock to this site with false information to lure unsuspecting romantics into their scheme. Proceed with caution when fishing.

Match

Why it is safe? While anyone can create a free dating profile on Match.com, you must have a paid membership in order to communicate with matches. Scammers significantly decrease when a financial investment is associated to communicate with matches.

Why scammers love it? Matches are sent via your preferences, the more open your settings are to matches the more matches you receive. Generally, people that are willing to invest in an online profile have disposable resources. Scammers target individuals that appear to have resources by developing a misleading relationship only to ask for wire transferred money in the end.

EHarmony

Why it is safe? EHarmony only allows you to communicate with matches through a paid membership. You are required to complete extensive personality and lifestyle questionnaires prior to receiving matches and you are only allowed to communicate with individuals sent to you daily. EHarmony walks you through optional steps of communication prior to open email and provides tips for safe communication.

Why scammers love it? EHarmony generally sends people matches that are outside of their city and/or state despite individual’s preferences. Scammers prey on hopeful’s interested in long-distance relationships as they can fuel their fake stories for longer periods of time manipulating a tragic story which requires a transfer of funds.

There is no perfect dating site that can eliminate scammers or protect your identity. Taking proactive measures when putting your heart and personal information in a vulnerable place is the only way you can avoid romance scammers.
