Groundhog Day 2016: Rejoice! Punxsutawney Phil Does Not See His Shadow

It was a brisk and clear morning as approximately 10,000 people gathered for the 130th Groundhog Day Celebration in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania. Onlookers anxiously endured 20 degree temperatures and frost as the legendary groundhog, Punxsuawtawney Phil, emerged from his burrow. WeGoLook dispatched one of our Lookers to verify if Phil would see his shadow. Tradition holds that Phil the Groundhog whispers if he saw his shadow to the President of the Groundhog Club but in WeGoLook could not just take his word as fact. We needed verification.

Groundhog Day 2016

This morning at 7:23 am, Punxsutawney Phil, the world's most famous groundhog prognosticator was awoken from his burrow. Atop Gobbler’s Knob, Phil was presented by Ron Ploucha, Co-Handler/Stump Warden and Bill Deely, President was on hand to translate his prediction. This gift of translation is passed from president to president thanks to the help of walking stick possessed by the first president of the Groundhog Club. President Bill Deely announced that Phil did not see his shadow and we can expect an early spring to joyous applause from the crowd. WeGoLook was on the scene to confirm that while it was announced that Phil did not observe his shadow, we cannot confirm definitely if he actually did or not.

This year, over 10,000 people attended the 130th Groundhog Day Celebration in Punxsutawney after a weekend full of events at Barclay Square. Festivities began on Saturday with a Breakfast with Phil and included family activities, the Groundhog Ball, the annual Groundhog Club Banquet, several musical acts starting at 3:00 A.M. the morning of the ceremony. This year Miss Pennsylvania, Elena LaQuarta, was also in attendance.

Groundhog Day History

Every February 2nd, Punxsutawney Phil emerges from his burrow on Gobbler's Knob and predicts if there will be an early spring or not. Groundhog Day originated with the old legend of Candelmas Day that said if February 2nd is bright and clear the hedgehog would come out of his hole and if he sees his shadow would return to his burrow for six more weeks of winter. If the day is cloudy there would be no shadow and an early spring would come.

Other Groundhog Day Celebrations are held throughout the country in Staten Island, NY, Morgantown, WV, and Sun Prairie, WI. However, tradition regards Punxsutawney, PA as the most reliable groundhog protagonist source boasting the attendance of The Weather Channel at this year's event.
